In binder jetting, parts are formed within a bed of powder, requiring the removal of excess material before post-processing. This process, known as depowdering, is not merely a cleanup task; it's a critical step that directly impacts part quality and overall production efficiency. Why is it so crucial to carry out a optimal depowdering process? The residual powder adhering to the "green" parts can obscure fine details and compromise surface finish and can interfere with post-processing steps, leading to dimensional inaccuracies and shape distortions. Furthermore, the delicate nature of green parts necessitates careful handling: removing them from the powder bed within the controlled environment of a depowdering Station minimizes the risk of cracking or breakage. Lastly, efficient depowdering allows for quicker turnaround times, enabling rapid restarts and minimizing production downtime.

The depowdering process: a detailed look

Our depowdering process begins by removing the powder-filled Depowdering Box from the printer using a specialized lifting cart. This Box is then transferred to our Depowdering Station, where it rests on a sliding platform. Once installed, the operator gains precise control over the vertical movement of the powder bed, allowing for a methodical, safe and clean depowdering process.

Depowdering Station

The Depowdering Station includes the following features:

  • an integrated industrial vacuum for gentle removal of loose powder;
  • an air compressor with adjustable pressure, for efficient and non-contact powder removal, minimizing the risk of damage and accelerating the depowdering process;
  • a range of brushes for cleaning of intricate features;
  • a controllable movable platform, allowing for precise, layer-by-layer depowdering, ensuring thorough powder removal.

Depowdering Tools

A well-executed depowdering process is crucial for production speed as well as material efficiency. Streamlining the depowdering stage accelerates the overall production cycle and allows for safe powder handling. It also enables fully recycling unused powder removed during the depowdering process for the next production run. Our Station is designed to contain and manage powder effectively, minimizing exposure and promoting a safe working environment.

The new Depowdering Station

Our new depowdering Station introduces a novel feature: the integrated Powder Recovery Box. This innovation allows for the direct transfer of recovered powder to our Armadillo feed bed, creating a closed-loop system that increases efficiency and reduces production costs. By recycling excess powder, we minimize material waste and associated expenses, significantly improving production sustainability.

Filling Box

A two-stage depowdering process, where initial depowdering takes place inside the printer and green-strength parts are then transferred for further depowdering, is not only inefficient - it also adds to the risk of damaging or cracking the parts.

Our new Depowdering Station lets the entire depowdering process to take place within a controlled environment, maximizing part integrity and simplifying the workflow. Furthermore, the new Powder Recovery Box allows for easy and safe powder recycling into the Armadillo printer. You can now effectively remove excess powder, revealing the final part with minimal risk of damage.

Fully backward compatible with our existing Depowdering Box designs, the new Depowdering Station seamlessly integrates with all Armadillo printers. Its user-friendly interface and intuitive controls make it easy to incorporate into existing workflows and enable achieving exceptional part quality while maximizing production capacity.
